Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi remake ‘Bugonia’ debuts to rave reviews

Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest collaboration with Emma Stone, the sci-fi thriller Bugonia, has landed with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, reports digitalspy.com. The film, which marks the acclaimed director’s fourth project with Stone, has been hailed by critics as “disturbing and unexpectedly moving.”

An English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia centres on two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap a powerful CEO, convinced she is an alien plotting to destroy Earth. The film’s premiere was met with a six-minute standing ovation, with attendees reportedly gasping at its more tense moments.

While Emma Stone’s performance has been widely praised, many critics highlight Jesse Plemons’s work as the film’s most “extraordinary performance.” The ensemble cast also includes Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Clueless star Alicia Silverstone.

The screenplay was penned by Will Tracy, known for co-writing The Menu and creating the HBO series The Regime. Bugonia is the latest in a fruitful partnership between Lanthimos and Stone, who have previously worked together on the Oscar-winning films The Favourite and Poor Things, as well as Kinds of Kindness.

The film also dropped its first official trailer, offering a glimpse into its peculiar world. Bugonia is set to be released in UK and US cinemas in October.
