Wireless Festival faces calls to axe Kanye West as sponsors withdraw

The UK government is facing growing calls from MPs and Jewish community leaders to block Kanye West from entering the country ahead of his scheduled headline performance at London’s Wireless Festival, per bbc.com. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the booking as “deeply concerning,” while major sponsors, including Pepsi and Diageo, have withdrawn their support for the event following the rapper’s history of antisemitic remarks.

The American artist, legally known as Ye, is due to headline three nights at Finsbury Park from July 10–12, with daily crowds expected to reach 50,000. However, the event’s commercial viability is under threat after Pepsi pulled its headline sponsorship on Sunday. Diageo and payment partner PayPal have also distanced themselves from the festival’s promotional materials.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has urged the government to refuse West a visa, citing a “pattern of behaviour” rather than an isolated lapse. This sentiment was echoed by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who labelled the rapper’s previous comments–including the release of a song titled Heil Hitler last year–as “completely unacceptable.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews has accused festival organiser Festival Republic of “profiteering from racism.” Chief executive Michael Weiger noted that Australia previously blocked West’s entry on similar grounds and suggested the UK Home Office should follow suit.

Despite the political and commercial backlash, industry analysts note that West remains a significant commercial draw. His latest album currently holds the number three spot in the UK charts, and he recently completed two sold-out stadium shows in Los Angeles.

Haringey Council, the local licensing authority, stated it would seek assurances that all performers adhere to conditions prohibiting the denigration of any race or religion. Festival Republic and managing director Melvin Benn have yet to comment on the growing calls for cancellation.

Kanye West’s recent career has been marred by a series of pro-Nazi statements and antisemitic tropes, leading to the termination of several high-profile corporate partnerships. Although he issued a public apology in January attributing his actions to bipolar disorder, critics argue that providing a public platform at a major UK festival remains inappropriate.
