Victor Ehikhamenor, a celebrated Nigerian artist, is set to unveil his first solo exhibition in Brussels, Belgium. Titled “The Enigma of Time Remembered,” this exhibition will be hosted by Maruani Mercier Gallery from October 24 to December 7 at Avenue Louise 430.
Ehikhamenor’s work is renowned for its intricate blend of traditional African motifs and contemporary themes.
His latest exhibition, according to the gallery, promises to be a profound exploration of cultural identity, historical memory and the impact of globalisation. The public opening on October 24th from 4 pm to 7 pm will feature the artist himself, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with his thought-provoking pieces.
One of the standout works in the exhibition is “Pope XII In Benin Kingdom” (2021), a striking installation made from rosaries, thread and gemstones on lace textile. Measuring approximately 165 x 100 x 100 cm, this piece exemplifies Ehikhamenor’s ability to merge religious symbolism with cultural commentary. The use of plastic rosaries in his work is particularly poignant, symbolising the displacement of religious motifs and critiquing environmental destruction caused by non-biodegradable materials.
Ehikhamenor’s art often delves into the complexities of religious and cultural identity. His perforated, handmade paper pieces reference ancient scarification rituals, while his paintings and installations draw inspiration from sacred spaces in his hometown and the Benin royal palace. Through these works, he illustrates the transformation of cultural symbols, imbuing them with new meanings and underscoring their enduring relevance.
A fervent advocate for the repatriation of looted Benin bronzes, Ehikhamenor uses his platform to highlight the importance of reclaiming cultural artefacts. His work not only addresses historical injustices but also celebrates the resilience and creativity of African cultures.
Ehikhamenor’s impressive resume includes exhibitions at the Nigerian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. His works are part of prestigious collections such as The High Museum of Art, The Onassis Foundation and The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. He is also the founder of the Lagos creative residency ‘Angels and Muse’ and the ‘Ink Not Blood’ peace campaign, which aims to prevent election violence in Nigeria.
“The Enigma of Time Remembered” exhibition is a testament to Ehikhamenor’s ability to bridge the past and present, creating a dialogue that resonates on a global scale. As visitors walk through the gallery, they will be transported through time and space, experiencing the rich tapestry of African history and culture through the eyes of one of its most compelling contemporary artists.
