Vertical has acquired the United States distribution rights for “Lords of War,” the sequel to the 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, per movieweb.com.
Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage reprises his role as arms dealer Yuri Orlov in the production, which is scheduled for a 2027 theatrical release. The distributor confirmed that the first footage from the film will be screened for industry professionals at CinemaCon next week.

The sequel, written and directed by returning filmmaker Andrew Niccol, introduces Bill Skarsgård as Anton, the estranged son of Orlov. The plot follows Anton’s attempts to surpass his father’s notoriety by assembling a private mercenary army to exploit American military interventions in the Middle East. This emergence triggers a high-stakes generational conflict for control of the global arms trade.
Joining Cage and Skarsgård in the ensemble cast are Sylvia Hoeks, Greg Tarzan Davis and Laura Harrier. The production comes more than two decades after the original film, which followed Orlov’s rise through the illicit weapons market during the end of the Cold War.
While the 2005 original received a mixed critical reception, it became a significant commercial and cult success, maintaining high audience approval ratings. The sequel was first announced in 2023, and the new distribution deal with Vertical marks a major step toward its completion.
The original Lord of War was noted for its cynical exploration of the international arms industry and its basis in real-world geopolitical events. By shifting focus to the Middle East and modern private military contractors, the sequel aims to update these themes for a contemporary audience while exploring the personal legacy of its central protagonist.
