Tribute night for Tam Fiofori holds August 16 in Lagos

A tribute night for the late Tam Fiofori, a celebrated Nigerian documentary photographer, filmmaker and cultural icon, is set to take place on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Freedom Park in Lagos.

The event, organised by friends and family, aims to honour Fiofori’s contributions to Nigerian art and culture.

Tam Fiofori, who passed away on June 25, 2024, at the age of 82, was known for his photographic albums chronicling Nigeria’s history and his documentaries on notable Nigerian artists. His work spanned decades and continents, including a stint in 1960s Harlem where he managed Sun Ra and contributed to the foundations of Afrofuturism.

The tribute night, to begin at 5pm, will be held at the historic Freedom Park on Lagos Island.

Organisers, including Ugoma Ebilah, Chriss Aghana Nwobu, Frank Halim, Jahman Anikulapo and Juliet Ezenwa Pearce, have scheduled a suite of programmes to celebrate Fiofori’s life and work.

The event e-flyer states, “He has joined our ancestors who sailed and rode these waters since time began,” highlighting Fiofori’s connection to Nigerian heritage and his far-reaching influence.

This Lagos tribute complements funeral arrangements scheduled in Port Harcourt. Fiofori will be laid to rest in Okrika, his hometown on Thursday August 22, 2024.

Friends, colleagues and admirers are invited to gather, reminisce, sing songs and share stories about Tam Fiofori’s impactful life and career. The tribute night promises to welcome attendees “as Uncle Tam did all his life,” celebrating his legacy of openness and cultural enrichment.
