Def Jam Recordings, in partnership with Def Jam Africa, has featured various top African artists on its Rhythms of Zamunda soundtrack album, a collection of songs inspired by comedy film Coming 2 America set for release on 5 March.
South African rapper Nasty C.
Last week, the record label released the project’s lead single ‘Black & White’ by South African rapper Nasty C featuring US R&B singer Ari Lennox. Rhythms of Zamunda will be released on the same day as the movie.
Other artists featured on Rhythms of Zamunda include South African acts Ricky Tyler, Tellaman, Prince Kaybee, Msaki, DJ Ganyani, Th&o, Bonj, Anatii, De Mthuda and Njelic. Nigeria is represented by Tiwa Savage, Oxlade, Larry Gaaga, Umu Obiligbo, Tekno, Alpha P and TMXO.
Completing the list of artists are Sha Sha (Zimbabwe), Gemini Major (Malawi), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Locko (Cameroon), Toofan (Togo), Fally Ipupa (DRC), Morgan Heritage (Jamaica) and the late DJ Arafat (Ivory Coast)
“It was important for Def Jam Africa to be involved because the first film was so legendary to Africans in the diaspora,” Universal Music South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa CEO Sipho Dlamini. “The film franchise is tongue-in-cheek but conveys a rich quality of life in Africa. That is reflected in the music on Rhythms of Zamunda. We wanted to represent some of the sounds that are relevant, impactful and current on the continent.”
In an excerpt from an upcoming interview with Music In Africa, Dlamini said: “This is a revenue generated for the artists because with the global attention that the movie Coming 2 America will have, this music will now be consumed at a global level.”
