Tom Holland has revealed in a recent interview that tensions on the set of his 2023 Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room nearly compromised his sobriety journey, per independent.co.uk. The 28-year-old British actor, known for his role as Spider-Man, described the production environment as lacking harmony and fraught with conflict.
“There was quite a lot of animosity on that set,” Holland disclosed, noting that the disagreements went beyond typical creative differences. “There was a lot of arguing and butting heads.” While he didn’t specify the parties involved in these conflicts, Holland emphasised that these weren’t the usual “creative debates” he typically welcomes.
The challenging production schedule began just two months into Holland’s sobriety, presenting what the publication called “a trial by fire.” The actor admitted to contemplating breaking his sobriety during this period, reflecting, “If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?”
The psychological toll of portraying Danny Sullivan, a character involved in a 1979 shooting, proved particularly demanding. The role, based on Billy Milligan – the first person acquitted of a crime due to dissociative identity disorder – led Holland to take an unprecedented year-long break from acting. “The mental aspect really beat me up,” he confessed to Entertainment Weekly.
In the same interview, Holland made headlines by announcing his intention to step away from acting entirely when he becomes a father. “When I have kids, you will not see me in movies anymore… I will just disappear off the face of the earth,” the actor, who is currently dating co-star Zendaya, stated definitively.
Despite these challenges, Holland’s commitment to sobriety remained intact, demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of professional adversity.
