TillDayBreak (TDB) has released his new EP, Life in the Trenches, a continuation of his mission to document the realities of life in Nigeria. Treating music like a “notebook for the streets,” TillDayBreak focuses on the daily realities facing Nigerian youth: the pressure, the struggle for survival, and the brief moments of clarity that sustain them.
The EP is a blend of Afro-soul, spoken word and hip-hop, offering an unflinching look at challenging topics without providing easy answers or polished endings. As the artist himself describes it, “This is not just music. It’s consciousness brought to reality through sound and storytelling”.
Life in the Trenches follows his earlier projects, Love in the Trenches (2023) and Heartwork (2024).
The five-track project tackles various facets of the Nigerian youth experience: “Shege” opens the EP with an unflinching and empathetic look at domestic abuse, cutting through the stigma surrounding the issue. “CashApp” traces the descent of a young man, lured by the promise of fast money, from potential to peril in just a few verses. “Sapa Nice One” uses dark humour and sharp wit to explore heartbreak caused not by betrayal, but by financial strain and “empty pockets”. “Black Tax” gives voice to the quiet exhaustion of being the family’s financial lifeline.
The closing track, “Lagos,” serves as a dual love letter and lament to the city that “demands everything and gives back in fragments”.
The EP’s power lies in its presence, offering “lyrics that listen, beats that breathe, and stories that feel familiar because they’re true”.
