The debate surrounding Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX half-time show

As the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots prepare for Super Bowl LX this Sunday, the pitch isn’t the only place seeing a clash.

According to a bbc.com report, a cultural “war” is brewing over the half-time headliner: Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny.

The world’s most-streamed artist, known for performing almost exclusively in Spanish, has drawn unprecedented heat from conservative critics for his outspoken stance on US immigration. Despite being a US citizen, the 31-year-old has faced calls for deportation from detractors who have dubbed the event the “Woke Bowl.” Even Donald Trump weighed in, calling the selection “absolutely ridiculous.”

In response, the conservative group Turning Point USA has scheduled a counter-programme featuring Trump ally Kid Rock to air during the set.

At a Thursday press conference, the singer (born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) insisted his goal is “unity and healing.” However, his recent “ICE out” declaration at the Grammy Awards – a direct swipe at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement – suggests he isn’t backing down.

“We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans,” he told the Grammy audience, referencing recent controversial federal operations.

For many, his presence is a milestone. “Puerto Rico is part of the US, and not a lot of people know that,” says Eddie Miranda, a Chicago-based DJ. “To have a piece of America that’s been ignored for so long on that stage is extraordinary.”

Professor Vanessa Díaz, a Latino studies expert, calls the performance “profoundly political.” While pop-punk veterans Green Day will join him, Bad Bunny will be the first artist to lead a half-time show entirely in Spanish.

The NFL’s shift toward global icons like Bad Bunny marks a departure from its conservative roots. Experts suggest the league needs the “King of Latin Trap” to capture the growing Latino demographic more than he needs the NFL.

With over 100 million viewers expected, the world is waiting to see if Bad Bunny will use his “La Casita” stage for a party or a protest.
