The Canex Book Factory launches creative writing workshop

The Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX), an Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) initiative is set to launch an inspiring new programme for prose writers of African and Caribbean descent.

The CANEX Book Factory Creative Writing Workshop, held in collaboration with the James and Grace Adichie Foundation and Narrative Landscape Press Limited, will, according to a statement, unfold over 10 days this summer in the tranquil setting of Aburi, Ghana.

This workshop is part of the broader CANEX Book Factory initiative, which aims to highlight and enhance the book value chain in Africa. It provides a unique opportunity for writers to develop their literary talents while fully immersing themselves in their craft. Travel and accommodation will be covered by CANEX, allowing participants to focus solely on their creative process.

Acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie will lead the workshop, supported by a team of experienced writers and professionals. They will offer guidance not only on the art of prose but also on the legal and commercial aspects of the writing profession. Attendees will have the chance to contribute to an anthology of writing to be published post-workshop.

Reflecting Africa’s linguistic diversity, the workshop welcomes speakers of all six official African Union languages—Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Kiswahili. Comprehensive translation services will ensure all participants can fully engage with the programme.

Writers interested in participating are invited to submit a 250–500-word prose sample along with proof of nationality. The submission window is open from June 15 to June 30, 2024. Eligible applicants must be from an African Union member country or a citizen of a CARICOM member country. Submissions can be made through the CANEX website at https://canex.africa/canex-writing-workshop.

This workshop is just one of several events organised by the CANEX Book Factory, an annual programme dedicated to promoting African literature. The initiative will culminate in an award ceremony at the CANEX WKND in Algiers, Algeria, from October 16-19, 2024.
