“Superman” continues box office ascent, outpacing predecessors

David Corenswet’s Superman has cemented its box office dominance, soaring to $57.2 million domestically in its second weekend, per ew.com. This strong showing brings its global total to $406.8 million, officially surpassing the lifetime worldwide gross of 2006’s Superman Returns and outpacing 2013’s Man of Steel at the same point in its run.

Despite a 54 per cent drop from its $122 million opening, the film’s performance signals a promising start for James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. While it still trails Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($260.4 million) and The Dark Knight ($313.7 million) in second-week domestic earnings, Superman comfortably held the top spot against new releases.

The Gen Z update to I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Smurfs reboot debuted with $13 million and $11 million, respectively, both falling short of projections.

Meanwhile, Jurassic World Rebirth continues its impressive run, taking second place with $23.4 million, bringing its global total to $648 million.

The upcoming release of Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25th is set to ignite a fresh superhero box office battle, posing the biggest challenge yet to Superman’s reign.
