Street artist’s giant bird mural soars into world’s best street art competition

Megan Russell, known professionally as Peachzz, has earned a nomination for creating potentially the world’s best street art piece of 2024, according to bbc.com. Her stunning 25-metre tall mural “Reverie,” featuring a majestic heron and kingfisher, has captured international attention and secured a place among 50 global finalists in Street Art Cities’ best of 2024 awards.

The massive artwork, which towers over Sheffield’s Pounds Park, represents the culmination of an intense 10-day artistic marathon, with Russell dedicating up to 12 hours daily to complete the 225-square-metre masterpiece. The piece, commissioned by Sheffield City Council, first gained recognition by winning Street Art Cities’ monthly competition in June, competing against works from Argentina, Colombia, Russia, Spain, and Denmark.

“Having such support from Sheffield, and seeing how much the city embraces street art, has been absolutely amazing,” Russell shared. “Looking back a decade ago, I never imagined reaching this level. I used to dream about being nominated for these competitions, and now it’s actually happening.”

The nomination holds particular emotional significance for Russell, as it coincides with the passing of her grandmother, Iris Reynolds, who inspired her artistic pseudonym “Peachzz” through childhood memories of shared peaches and ice cream. “She was incredibly creative and always followed my work. She seemed really proud,” Russell reflected.

Beyond this achievement, Russell is working to revitalize Sheffield’s street art scene by launching the Lick Of Paint Fest alongside fellow artist Alastair Flindall. A potential top ranking for “Reverie” could provide crucial momentum for the festival’s success.

Public voting remains open on Street Art Cities’ website until the end of January, offering Sheffield residents the chance to support their local artist on the global stage.
