Spike Lee declares Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On?’ greatest album of all time

Spike Lee has made a bold proclamation, naming Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece What’s Going On? as the greatest album ever recorded, per faroutmagazine.co.uk. The statement came during an interview with Blackfilm, where the renowned filmmaker discussed the pivotal role of music in his latest Vietnam War drama, Da 5 Bloods.

Lee, fresh off his Oscar win for BlacKkKlansman, has long been known for his masterful integration of music in his films. However, Da 5 Bloods takes this to new heights, featuring Gaye’s seminal work as a central character in the narrative.

“The Marvin Gaye music was specifically from the greatest album ever, in my opinion, What’s Going On?” Lee stated. He explained that the album’s creation was deeply influenced by Gaye’s brother Franklin, who served three tours in Vietnam, and by the struggles of returning veterans in Detroit.

The director’s admiration for the album is evident in its prominent placement throughout the film. Lee noted, “His music and his words are like a character in the film.” This artistic choice serves to underscore the movie’s themes of racial inequality and the lasting impact of the Vietnam War on Black veterans.

What’s Going On? is widely regarded as a turning point in Gaye’s career, marking a departure from his earlier pop hits towards more socially conscious material. The album’s exploration of war, poverty and racial injustice resonated deeply with audiences of the time and continues to be relevant today.

Lee’s declaration adds to the album’s already legendary status, cementing its place in both musical and cinematic history.
