Soulja Boy has been released from custody after prosecutors dismissed a weapons case against him due to insufficient evidence, per bbc.com.
The “Crank That” star was arrested on Sunday after a traffic stop in Los Angeles led to the discovery of a firearm in the vehicle. The 35-year-old rapper, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, spent two nights in jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated the case “was declined due to insufficient evidence.”
Shortly after his release, Way posted “First day out” on his social media.
This is not the first legal issue for the rapper. In April, he was ordered to pay $4.25 million to a woman who successfully sued him for sexual battery and assault. Way had denied the allegations, claiming their relationship was consensual.
In 2014, he was sentenced to probation for carrying a loaded firearm but later violated the terms, leading to an almost eight-month prison sentence.
Soulja Boy’s 2007 hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” spent seven weeks at number one in the US and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song.
