Sophie Tea becomes 1st artists to sell work on TikTok Shop

A West Midlands-born artist has become one of the first creators to sell original works through TikTok’s new fine art category, according to bbc.com. Sophie Tea, who was raised in Birmingham and Wolverhampton, launched the collection to her 1.3 million followers by painting live on the app. The debut follows months of the artist petitioning the platform to bridge the gap between social media and traditional art collecting.

Tea, who had no formal training, believes the “QVC-style” live shopping experience is the future of the industry. “Consumers are now demanding more from the people they are buying from,” she explained, noting that the platform allows for direct engagement and transparency in the creative process.

Her journey began unexpectedly in 2014. Despite being discouraged by teachers from pursuing a career in the arts, she rediscovered her passion while travelling in India. Facing a shortage of funds before a planned corporate job in London, she bartered a mural for a stay at a hostel, an experience that convinced her to abandon the consultancy path for the studio.

Beyond her commercial success, Tea remains committed to her roots through her “Charity Shop Friday” series. The project, which has featured locations in Solihull, Telford, and Wolverhampton, involves transforming second-hand finds into high-end art. She views the initiative as a way to encourage younger generations to become advocates for the arts while finding beauty in the mundane.

By spearheading the new TikTok Shop category, Tea hopes to empower other independent artists to bypass traditional gatekeepers and experiment with digital platforms to sustain their careers.
