The South London Gallery is set to host an immersive evening of sonic exploration on March 19th, 2025, with its unique event, “The Conch.” This edition delves into the profound impact of sound on the human body, offering a platform for artists to share their works-in-progress and engage in direct dialogue with the audience.
“The Conch” distinguishes itself by fostering a collaborative environment where artists receive immediate feedback, shaping the evolution of their creative endeavors. This forthcoming event features three distinct artistic perspectives, each offering a unique lens through which to perceive sound.
Camille Brée, a Paris-based artist, will explore the unseen connections between spaces, focusing on thresholds, ghostly light, and energy flows. Her work delves into presence and sentience, inviting the audience to consider the subtle, often overlooked, interactions between environments and bodies.
Zhuo Mengting, known for her minimalist and intimate performances, will present a segment from her new performance lecture. She will investigate the relationship between sound, space, and scenography, using vocalizations and site-specific activations to explore the invisible thresholds within emptiness.
Seo Hye Lee, a London-based deaf artist and cochlear implant user, will present textile works that translate soundscapes into embroidered pieces. Drawing from her personal experiences, Lee’s work uses sewing and repeating threads to visually represent the passage of time and the interpretation of sound. Her presentation of her work “Portland Forecast” and other explorations of sound through mediums like moving image will be a highlight.
The event, held in the Clore Studio, promises an intimate setting for these explorations. The South London Gallery has ensured accessibility, with live captioning and wheelchair access, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity.
Attendees are encouraged to engage with the artists, sharing their reactions and thoughts. This interactive format underscores “The Conch’s” mission to bridge the gap between artist and audience, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas.
Tickets are priced at £5 and are available through Eventbrite, with limited availability. The gallery advises early booking to secure a place, though a limited number of tickets may be available at the door.
