Singer Roberta Flack Dies at 88

Roberta Flack, the iconic singer and pianist whose soulful voice and timeless ballads defined an era, died Monday at the age of 88, per newsweek.com.

Flack, a five-time Grammy winner, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, her publicist confirmed.

Flack’s career skyrocketed in the 1970s, when her haunting rendition of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” was featured in Clint Eastwood’s film Play Misty for Me. The song became a cultural phenomenon, earning Flack her first Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1973. She followed this success with another timeless classic, “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” which solidified her place as one of the most influential artists of her generation.

Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack was a classically trained pianist discovered by jazz musician Les McCann. Her unique ability to blend classical, jazz and soul music set her apart in the industry. Over her illustrious career, Flack won five Grammys, including consecutive awards for Record of the Year in 1973 and 1974—a feat few artistes have achieved.

Beyond her musical accomplishments, Flack was a passionate advocate for social justice. She performed at historic events and collaborated with legends like Donny Hathaway and Jackie Robinson, using her platform to champion equality and civil rights. Her music often reflected her commitment to these causes, resonating deeply with audiences worldwide.

In 2022, Flack revealed that she had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The condition left her unable to sing, but she continued to inspire through her resilience and dedication to her craft.

Tributes poured in from fans and fellow artists, celebrating Flack’s enduring impact on music and culture. “Roberta Flack’s voice was a gift to the world,” tweeted one fan. “Her music will live on forever.”

Flack’s legacy extends far beyond her chart-topping hits. She paved the way for future generations of artists, proving that music could be both deeply personal and universally powerful. As the world mourns her passing, her songs remain a testament to her extraordinary talent and unwavering spirit.

Roberta Flack is survived by her family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time. A public memorial is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
