Shonda Rhimes pays tribute to Eric Dane following death at 53

Shonda Rhimes has shared a poignant tribute to actor Eric Dane, who passed away on Thursday following a brave battle with ALS, according to parade.com.

The Grey’s Anatomy creator took to Instagram to honour the man who famously brought Dr Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” to life for six seasons. “Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families,” Rhimes wrote. “He was a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and on audiences around the world.”

Dane, 53, died on Thursday afternoon surrounded by his family. His representative confirmed the news, noting that he had spent his final days with his “devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world.”

The actor publicly revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) 10 months ago. Despite the progressive nature of the neurodegenerative disease, Dane remained committed to his craft, recently filming the third season of Euphoria, which is scheduled for release this April.

Rhimes’s production company, Shondaland, also released a retrospective video featuring Dane’s most iconic scenes and interview clips. “We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship, and humanity he shared with us,” Rhimes added.

Dane joined the ABC medical drama in 2006. Initially intended as a guest star, his immediate chemistry with the cast and popularity with viewers led to him becoming a series regular until his departure in 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
