“Severance” leads Emmy nominations with 27 nods

The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed Tuesday, kicking off the race to television’s biggest night, according to Newsweek.

Actors Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the contenders live from the Wolf Theater in North Hollywood. The ceremony is set to air on CBS on September 14 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Apple TV+’s “Severance” emerged as the frontrunner, securing an impressive 27 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. HBO’s “The Penguin” followed with 24 nods, while “The White Lotus” and Apple TV+’s freshman comedy “The Studio” each garnered 23 nominations. “The Studio” notably set a new record for a debut comedy series, surpassing “Ted Lasso’s” previous record of 20 nominations.

Netflix also had a strong showing with “Adolescence,” “The Diplomat,” and “Black Mirror” earning multiple nominations. HBO’s “The Pitt” also received significant recognition.

Comedy favorites like “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” and “Nobody Wants This” earned multiple nods in their respective categories. Limited series standouts include “Dying for Sex,” “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” and “Disclaimer.”

Among the notable acting nominations, Sterling K. Brown, Kathy Bates, Adam Scott, Quinta Brunson, and Michelle Williams are all in contention for lead roles. Reality and talk series categories saw “The Traitors,” “Top Chef,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” and “The Daily Show” receive nominations.

Snubs and Surprises:

This year’s nominations brought a mix of expected nods and unexpected omissions. Diego Luna was notably absent for his lead role in the final season of “Andor,” and Natasha Lyonne’s performance in “Poker Face” also missed out. “Only Murders in the Building” stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez were snubbed, though Martin Short earned his fourth nomination for the series.

Surprises included Sharon Horgan’s recognition for performance and writing on “Bad Sisters,” and Uzo Aduba’s nomination for “The Residence,” despite the show’s cancellation. Colman Domingo also earned a single nomination for “The Four Seasons” in the supporting comedy actor category, highlighting the unpredictable nature of this year’s Emmy race.

In a remarkable achievement, veteran actor Harrison Ford, just days after turning 83, received his first-ever Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Paul Rhoades in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.” Ford’s portrayal of the blunt yet compassionate therapist has also earned him recognition at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

Final voting for the Emmys will take place from August 18–27. The Creative Arts Emmys are scheduled for September 6–7.
