Scarlett Johansson, known for her role as Marvel’s Black Widow, has suggested that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, would make a fitting Marvel villain, per fortune.com. Johansson’s remark comes amid her criticism of Altman and OpenAI over unregulated AI, specifically the nonconsensual use of digital likenesses and deepfakes.
The tension between Johansson and Altman intensified when OpenAI’s new generative AI model, GPT-4o, featured a setting named Sky that mimicked Johansson’s voice. Despite her rejection of Altman’s prior request to voice ChatGPT, the release included a voice eerily similar to hers, sparking outrage from Johansson.
Altman’s reference to Johansson’s role in the movie “Her” and his approach to her again just before the model’s launch added fuel to the fire. Although Altman denied the voice was Johansson’s, Sky was eventually taken down.
Johansson expressed her shock and anger in a tweeted statement, highlighting the broader implications of unregulated AI on personal and professional lives. Her concerns resonate in the entertainment industry, where AI’s impact on image rights and privacy remains a contentious issue.
This incident has thrust Johansson into the spotlight as an advocate for AI regulation, aligning her with others in Hollywood calling for stricter controls to protect against misuse of AI technology.
