Sandave has roared onto the music scene with his debut EP, Lion of Africa Vol 1. Released to acclaim, the EP serves as a compelling narrative of his journey from Akure to Lagos, showcasing the strength and ambition that define his musical identity.
Born Oluwasaanu Sogo, relocating to Lagos in 2020 was a turning point for the emerging Nigerian artiste, allowing him to pursue his music and modelling career with vigour.
Lion of Africa Vol 1, according to a statement, is a testament to his resilience and growth, with each track offering a unique story underscored by Sandave’s distinctive Afrocentric sound. His ability to convey raw emotion and cultural pride has quickly resonated with fans, establishing him as one of Nigeria’s most promising new voices.
The EP’s lead single, “Eeya,” is a personal anthem. Sandave penned the song during one of his lowest moments, drawing inspiration from his mother’s encouraging words. The track’s title, derived from a Yoruba phrase expressing empowerment, encapsulates his drive to rise above challenges. Produced by Ramoni, “Eeya” weaves introspection with an uplifting beat, resonating deeply with listeners who value persistence and self-belief.
“Energy,” another highlight on the EP, explores the theme of love and the lengths one goes for loved ones. Collaborating with the celebrated producer Magicsticks, Sandave delivers a moving reflection on relationships and the emotional dedication that they inspire. The song, written in 2021, was partly inspired by a previous relationship, showcasing Sandave’s vulnerability and depth.
One of the EP’s most ambitious tracks, “Higher,” reflects Sandave’s resilience during a difficult period. Encouraged by producer Wickedest to channel his struggles into music, Sandave said he wrote and recorded “Higher” in under an hour. The track features iconic Nigerian rapper Ice Prince and Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka, creating a cross-cultural collaboration that emphasizes the power of self-motivation.
Other tracks on the EP further highlight Sandave’s creativity and cultural pride. “Paris” is a tribute to his dreams of exploring vibrant cities like Paris and Ecuador with his closest friends—a vision of success and freedom that fuels his work. Meanwhile, “I Know,” recorded during his birthday celebrations, captures the joyous spirit of African dance and Afrobeat rhythms, thanks to Wickedest’s production.
Closing the EP, “Jaiye” pays homage to Yoruba heritage and celebrates the influence of the legendary musician Dr. Ebenezer Obey. This song, rooted in traditional Yoruba rhythms, underscores Sandave’s respect for his cultural lineage while maintaining a modern, joyous beat that invites listeners to celebrate life’s highs.
Lion of Africa Vol 1 not only showcases Sandave’s diverse musical style but also highlights his journey of self-discovery and ambition. The EP, now available for streaming, promises to leave a lasting impact, resonating with fans who appreciate authentic African artistry and storytelling.
For fans of Afrobeat and modern African music, Sandave’s debut is a refreshing blend of culture, passion, and resilience—a celebration of what it means to pursue one’s dreams in the face of adversity.
