Sade returns with song honouring trans son on benefit album

Sade is set to make a powerful return to music with a heartfelt tribute to her transgender son, Izaak, per dazeddigital.com.

The song, titled “Young Lion,” will be featured on the upcoming benefit album “Transa,” a compilation celebrating the contributions of transgender individuals to contemporary society.

Breaking a six-year hiatus, the legendary British-Nigerian singer’s participation in this project marks a significant moment in both her career and the ongoing conversation about transgender rights and representation.

The album, produced by Red Hot, is scheduled for release on November 20th and will showcase over 100 artists across 46 tracks, symbolically divided into eight chapters to mirror the eight stripes of the Pride flag.

“Young Lion” reportedly includes touching lyrics such as, “You must have felt so alone, I should have known,” reflecting Sade’s empathy for her son’s journey and a hint of parental regret for not recognising his struggles earlier. Izaak has been open about his transition on social media, sharing his experiences with his followers.

Massima Bell, co-producer of “Transa” and a transgender activist, praised the track’s significance: “It’s amazing to hear a legendary musician like Sade sing about her heartfelt experience as the parent of a trans child. It’s incredibly powerful.”

The album boasts an impressive lineup, featuring new original music from artists such as Sam Smith, Moses Sumney, André 3000, Laura Jane Grace, and Fleet Foxes. Red Hot, known for its groundbreaking AIDS awareness compilations in the past, was inspired to create “Transa” following the tragic loss of trans artist SOPHIE in 2021.

Red Hot executive director Dust Reid emphasised the album’s mission to highlight trans and non-binary individuals as societal leaders, celebrating their resilience and contributions in the face of current challenges.
