Robert Duvall dies aged 95

Veteran actor Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning titan of cinema whose career spanned seven decades, has died at the age of 95, according to film-news.co.uk.

His wife, Luciana, confirmed that the Tender Mercies star passed away peacefully on Sunday at his ranch in Virginia. In a poignant social media tribute, she described him as “one of the greatest actors of our time” and a man whose passion for his craft was matched only by his love for the “truth of the human spirit.”

Duvall’s extraordinary journey in Hollywood began with a wordless but haunting debut as Boo Radley in the 1962 classic To Kill a Mockingbird. He soon became a cornerstone of New Hollywood, delivering iconic performances in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation.

Throughout his career, Duvall was a fixture at the Academy Awards, earning seven nominations. While he was celebrated for his versatility, he finally secured the Best Actor Oscar in 1983 for his nuanced portrayal of an alcoholic country singer in Tender Mercies.

His trophy cabinet also included four Golden Globes, a BAFTA, two Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

From the terrifying intensity of The Great Santini to the soulful grit of The Apostle, Duvall remained active well into his 90s. His final screen credits included the 2022 films Hustle and The Pale Blue Eye.

Duvall is survived by Luciana, his wife of 21 years. The family has requested privacy as they celebrate the memories of a man who remained, until the end, a quintessential storyteller.
