“’Regretting You” edges “Black Phone 2” in tight, anemic Halloween weekend race

Paramount is projecting a narrow victory for its Colleen Hoover adaptation, ‘Regretting You,’ claiming the No. 1 spot with an estimated $8.1 million in its second weekend, just ahead of Universal/Blumhouse’s horror sequel, ‘Black Phone 2,’ which is called at $8.0 million for its third frame, per deadline.com.

The intense box office “death match” between the drama about a grieving mother and daughter and the horror tale of a devil-faced kidnapper will ultimately be decided by final Sunday numbers. Paramount is banking on a strong bounce-back from young female audiences today, a pattern observed after last weekend’s World Series Baseball competition.

Note: Competing studio executives are forecasting a different outcome, predicting Black Phone 2 to win the weekend, $8million to $7.2million, suggesting Paramount may be over-calling its Sunday estimate.

The weekend is shaping up to be one of the lowest of the year, with overall estimates around $53.5 million for all titles, potentially making it the second-lowest box office frame of 2025. This poor performance is attributed to a potent mix of factors: Halloween falling on a Friday and the World Series Game 7, which saw an L.A. Dodgers win.

Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian voiced the industry’s anxious sentiment, exclaiming, “The cavalry cannot get here soon enough,” as studios pin their hopes on major tentpole releases, starting with Disney/20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands next weekend, to course-correct a disastrous October.
