“Pachinko” Author Min Jin Lee announces new novel “American Hagwon”

Min Jin Lee, the bestselling author of Pachinko, is set to release her highly anticipated new novel, “American Hagwon,” on September 29, per publishersweekly.com.

The title has been acquired by Grand Central Publishing imprint Cardinal for North American release, while 4th Estate (HarperCollins UK) will handle the British Commonwealth and audio rights for a simultaneous global launch.

“American Hagwon” marks the third instalment in Lee’s acclaimed “diaspora quartet,” following the success of Free Food for Millionaires and the National Book Award finalist Pachinko.

The novel spans the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, charting the journey of the Koh family. According to the publisher, the story explores the family’s “almost all-consuming faith” that education serves as the ultimate gateway to security and success for the next generation.

Reagan Arthur, publisher at Cardinal, will personally edit the North American edition. The deal was brokered by Ben Sevier at Grand Central Publishing and Peter Straus at RCW.
