Oscar Nominations 2026: “Sinners” makes history with record 16 nods

Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners has dominated the 2026 Academy Award nominations, earning a record-breaking 16 mentions including Best Picture and Best Director, per hollywoodreporter.com. The Warner Bros. production outpaced Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which secured 13 nominations.

Other heavy hitters in the Best Picture race include Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value, all of which earned nine nods apiece. Completing the ten-film shortlist for the top prize are Bugonia, F1, Hamnet, The Secret Agent, and Train Dreams.

Warner Bros. leads the studio tally with 30 nominations, followed by Neon with 18 and Netflix with 16. In a year of notable shifts, the Academy introduced its first new category since 2002: Best Casting, with Hamnet and Sinners among the inaugural nominees.

While veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Stone secured spots in the acting categories, the morning was marked by significant shocks. The musical Wicked: For Good was completely shut out, while Delroy Lindo and Kate Hudson scored surprise nominations for their respective roles in Sinners and Song Sung Blue.

To ensure integrity, the Academy has enforced stricter viewing requirements this year. Members must now verify they have watched every nominee in a category via the Academy Screening Room app or formal festival logs before being eligible to vote.

The 98th Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 15.
