The films Oppenheimer, Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon emerged as the frontrunners, with “Oppenheimer” leading the pack with an impressive 13 nods at the 96th Academy Awards nominations. Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece secured nominations in key categories, including best picture and best actor for Cillian Murphy, just one nomination shy of the all-time record set by Titanic in 1998.
A notable breakthrough was made by Lily Gladstone, who became the first Native American nominated for the best actress category for her outstanding performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. This historic moment marked a significant step towards inclusivity in Hollywood.
However, the buzz surrounding Barbie was not without controversy, as the film received eight nominations but faced surprising snubs in the best director and leading actress categories. Margot Robbie, the star of Barbie, was notably absent from the best actress category, while director Greta Gerwig missed out on a best director nod.
Surprises continued with America Ferrara receiving a best supporting actress nomination for her role in Barbie, with critics attributing her impassioned speech on feminism as a deciding factor. Despite these unexpected turns, Barbie secured nominations in categories such as best picture, best supporting actor for Ryan Gosling, and two nods for best original song.
Poor Things, a graphic art house film starring Emma Stone, emerged as the second most-nominated movie, receiving 11 Oscar nomations. Stone, renowned for her portrayal of a sex-crazed young woman, is set to compete for the best actress award against formidable contenders like Annette Bening, Sandra Huller, Carey Mulligan and Lily Gladstone.
The best actor in a leading role category promises a fierce competition between Bradley Cooper and Cillian Murphy, with Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, and Jeffrey Wright also in the running. Surprisingly, Leonardo DiCaprio went unrecognised for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
As the Oscars approach, the anticipation builds for the showdown between Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, both nominated for best directing and vying for the coveted best picture award. Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s absence from the best director category raises questions about gender representation in the industry.
The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony live on ABC.
