Cassava Republic Press has revealed details about Olumide Popoola’s upcoming novel, “Like Water Like Sea,” slated for release in May 2024. Following the success of the acclaimed author’s debut work, When We Speak of Nothing, her second novel, the publisher stated, promises to be a deeply immersive journey into the realms of grief, love, motherhood, mental health and self-discovery.
“Like Water Like Sea” is set against the vibrant backdrop of London and follows the protagonist, Nia, as she grapples with loss and navigates the complexities of her relationships. Central to Nia’s journey is the shadow cast by her late sister’s absence and her mother’s ongoing battle with mental health issues. Through Nia’s experiences, Popoola explores the process of falling apart to become whole again.
Critics are already buzzing about the novel, with acclaimed author Chinelo Okparanta praising it as “a raw exploration of the trials and tribulations faced by several individuals.” Popoola’s compelling storytelling and vibrant characters promise to captivate readers from start to finish.
At the heart of the story is Nia’s quest for self-realisation, as she confronts her grief while navigating new relationships and rediscovering herself. From the allure of Temi to the complexities of her friendship with Rahul and Crystal, Nia’s journey is as intricate as it is profound.
The novel also shines a light on the complexity of motherhood and the nuanced dynamics within familial relationships. By addressing themes of mental illness and identity, “Like Water Like Sea” offers readers a deeper understanding of the human experience and the resilience inherent within us all.
Olumide Popoola, a London-based Nigerian-German writer and speaker, has garnered international acclaim for her previous works, including the novella this is not about sadness and the play Also by Mail. Her debut novel, When We Speak of Nothing, received widespread praise upon its release in 2017.
In addition to her literary pursuits, Popoola serves as an Associate Lecturer on the post-graduate course Writing for Change at Central Saint Martins (UAL). She is available for events, interviews, and related conversations surrounding the release of “Like Water Like Sea.”
Stay tuned for the release of “Like Water Like Sea” on May 28th, 2024, and join Nia on her poignant journey of grief, love, and self-discovery.
