Nigerian-born stars shine at 2026 BAFTA Film Awards

Nigerian talent took centre stage at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards in London on Sunday, with actress Wunmi Mosaku and the acclaimed feature My Father’s Shadow among the night’s big winners.

Wunmi Mosaku secured the award for Best Supporting Actress for her compelling performance in Sinners. This is a significant milestone for the Nigerian-born star, who previously won in the same category in 2017 for Damilola, Our Loved Boy. Now a fixture in both British and Hollywood cinema, Mosaku’s latest win cements her status as one of the most formidable African actors on the global stage.

The evening also celebrated a breakthrough for Nigerian filmmaking. My Father’s Shadow, directed and produced by brothers Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies, won Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

The film, which previously made history as the first Nigerian production selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, is set against the backdrop of the 1993 Lagos election crisis. It follows the gripping journey of a father and his two sons navigating a city on the brink of political upheaval.

The 2026 Bafta Film Awards delivered a night of high drama and historic milestones at London’s Royal Festival Hall, as Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic One Battle After Another dominated the evening with six wins, including Best While One Battle After Another led the tally, while other productions held their ground. Hamnet, the Tudor drama took home two major awards, including Outstanding British Film and Leading Actress for Jessie Buckley, while Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s latest project proved a critical darling, earning three awards including Original Screenplay and Original Score. Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation dominated the craft categories, picking up three awards for Production Design, Costume Design, and Make-up and Hair.
