Nigerian animated film “Gammy & The Living Things” hits cinemas

Nollywood legends and a hip-hop star have united for one of Nigeria’s most ambitious animated features. MI Abaga, the renowned rapper, takes on his first lead voice role as the titular character in “Gammy & The Living Things,” which will start showing in cinemas nationwide on September 5. He is joined by an all-star cast, including veteran actors Joke Silva, Pete Edochie and popular comedian Bovi Ugboma.

The film, according to a statement, centres on Gammy, an ambitious agama lizard with big dreams who embarks on an unforgettable journey to Lagos. The story weaves together humour, music and heartwarming themes, capturing relatable struggles and uplifting cultural narratives.

FilmOne Entertainment, the official distributor, has hailed the project as a major milestone for Nigerian cinema.

“This is proof that African animation can stand tall on the big screen,” said Victoria Ogar, FilmOne’s Head of Distribution.

Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group, emphasised the film’s role in the broader vision of scaling Nollywood and giving it global visibility.

“Bringing ‘Gammy & The Living Things’ to cinemas is another example of how we are pushing boundaries, investing in new genres, and making sure African creativity has the platform it deserves.”

This star-studded animated feature is poised to be a landmark release in Nigerian cinema history, showcasing the immense talent and potential within the country’s film industry.
