The organisers of the Nigerian International Film and TV Summit (NIFS) Lagos have partnered with the US Consulate and The Writers Lab from New York to present an exclusive scriptwriting workshop.
The workshop, titled “Screenwriting for Emerging Talent in Nigeria: The First Steps to a Powerful Story,” will be held as part of the upcoming NIFS Lagos event, which takes place from August 28 – 30.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between aspiring Nigerian women writers and the global film business, offering a unique opportunity for skill development and networking.
Elizabeth Kaiden and Nitza Wilon, founders of The Writers Lab, will lead the two-hour virtual workshop. Their focus will be on empowering mature women to confidently use their voices and master strong writing techniques. The workshop will cover crucial aspects of storytelling, including character development, world-building, dialogue and the importance of the female gaze in storytelling.
Launched in 2015 with Meryl Streep as advocate, The Writers Lab is a non-profit incubator that amplifies
cinematic stories by women over 40 (because some people still believe women over 40 aren’t vital to the conversation). Its mission is to discover and promote superior film and television content by underrepresented women storytellers, while the vision is a world in which the stories of vital, complex women bring truth to the collective narrative.
In an innovative approach to accessibility, the workshop will be available not only virtually but also at over 25 American Corners across Nigeria, allowing participants from various regions to engage in this valuable learning experience.
Ijeoma Onah, founder of NIFS, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “This workshop represents a significant step towards nurturing diverse voices in our film industry. We’re excited to offer this opportunity to emerging talents across Nigeria.”
The event is supported by the US Consulate, underlining the international collaboration in fostering Nigeria’s creative industry.
Aspiring participants can register for a free Industry Access Badge here to attend this potentially career-changing workshop.
As the Nigerian film industry continues to gain global recognition, initiatives like this workshop play a crucial role in developing the next generation of storytellers, particularly focusing on amplifying women’s voices in the medium.
