Nicki Minaj has avoided potential criminal charges after Wayne County prosecutors declined to issue an arrest warrant following assault allegations made by her purported former manager, Brandon Garrett, during her Pink Friday 2 World Tour stop in Detroit last year, per allhiphop.com.
According to law enforcement sources, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office cited “insufficient evidence” to pursue criminal charges against the rap superstar, though they have requested the Detroit Police Department conduct further investigation into the matter.
The decision comes in the wake of a civil lawsuit filed by Garrett, who claims he served as Minaj’s manager during the tour. In court documents, Garrett alleges that the rapper became hostile after he delegated the task of collecting her prescriptions to another individual following her Detroit performance at Little Caesars Arena.
The lawsuit details a heated confrontation where Minaj allegedly struck Garrett on the head and made threatening remarks, causing him to seek refuge in a venue restroom “for hours” out of concern for his safety. Garrett’s civil complaint includes charges of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Minaj’s legal team has mounted a strong defense against the allegations. Her attorney, Judd Burstein, stated they had not yet been served with any formal complaint, but characterised the reported lawsuit as “completely false and frivolous.” Burstein expressed confidence that the matter would be swiftly resolved in Minaj’s favor.
While the rapper has cleared this initial hurdle with prosecutors declining to pursue criminal charges, the civil lawsuit remains active.
