“My Father’s Shadow” makes list of The 25 Best Movies of 2025

Director Akinola Davies Jr.’s acclaimed feature, My Father’s Shadow, has been named one of the year’s finest by American cinema publication, IndieWire.

The compelling drama, which explores complex themes of intergenerational conflict and personal legacy, secured a coveted spot on “The 25 Best Movies of 2025” list. Securing the 24th position, the film’s inclusion is a significant honour and firmly places it in the pantheon of the year’s most highly-regarded cinematic achievements, as judged by leading American critics.

My Father’s Shadow has been praised by those who have seen it for its powerful visual style and emotionally resonant performances, cementing director Davies Jr.’s status as a leading voice in modern film.

What makes the achievement particularly notable is the calibre of the other features the film joins on the list. IndieWire’s selection showcases a broad spectrum of auteur cinema and high-profile studio projects.

Topping the list at No. 1 is Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest epic, One Battle After Another, followed closely by Josh Safdie’s highly-anticipated solo venture, Marty Supreme. The list also features major studio fare, including the return of a beloved British horror franchise with Danny Boyle’s third instalment, 28 Years Later.

Further international recognition was given to Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao for her adaptation of Hamnet and David Cronenberg’s dark, psychological thriller, The Shrouds. Also making the cut are Ari Aster’s mysterious new project, Eddington, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

The inclusion of My Father’s Shadow amongst such distinguished company – from Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful dramatics to the high-concept genre work of David Cronenberg – highlights the global impact and critical success of independent filmmaking this year.
