The performers for the 2021 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) have been announced ahead of the event in Kampala, Uganda, on 20 February.
They include some of the continent’s most notable musicians such as Sarkodie, Wizkid, Khaligraph Jones, Nasty C and Diamond Platnumz. Other artists on the line-up comprise Soraia Ramos, Sheebah Karungi, Suspect 95 and Calema. More acts are expected to be announced soon.
“The MAMAs are a global spotlight on African music and artists, and this lineup of incredible talent speaks to the tremendous power of music on our continent,” ViacomCBS Networks Africa senior vice-president and general manager Monde Twala said. “This year’s show is dedicated to the youth of Africa, and we are committed to amplifying social change through music and culture and to elevating youth voices across our platforms.”
The 2021 MAMAs will reward the most popular contemporary music on the continent across 20 categories, including two new awards Best Ugandan Act and Alone Together: Best Lockdown Performance, which will celebrate the host country’s talent and reflect on the music scene of 2020, respectively.
This year’s ceremony is courtesy of a partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Tourism. The event will be held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions and broadcast globally on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and MTV Africa (DStv Channel 130).
Meanwhile, Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage and Wizkid, Master KG, Diamond Platnumz, and Calema have all recieved a nod in the coveted Artist of the Year category.
