Max B announces prison release date

Max B, the influential Harlem rapper and co-creator of the “wavy” sound, is set to be released from prison this fall, per hiphophero.com. After serving over 16 years behind bars, the 47-year-old artiste, whose real name is Charly Wingate, confirmed his freedom via an Instagram post on September 16.

“The Wave touches down November 9th,” he wrote, officially starting the countdown for his fans. The announcement was accompanied by a letter from the New Jersey State Parole Board, which confirmed that Max B will be released at the end of his maximum sentence. He will then begin a five-year period of Mandatory Supervision (MSV) in New York, as his parole plan has been approved.

Max B was originally sentenced to 75 years on serious charges including armed robbery and aggravated assault. In 2016, he accepted a plea deal, reducing his sentence to 20 years for aggravated manslaughter. His imminent release from Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey, marks a highly anticipated moment for the hip-hop community. A longtime affiliate of French Montana, Max B’s return has been a topic of conversation for years.

His unique, melodic style helped shape the sound of an entire generation of artistes.
