Marvin Gaye’s seminal 1976 masterpiece, I Want You, is set to receive a prestigious 50th-anniversary makeover, per udiscovermusic.com. Described by critics as one of the most sensual records in music history, the album reached number one upon its original release and remains a cornerstone of the soul genre. To mark the half-century milestone, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) has announced a series of high-end vinyl releases tailored for both audiophiles and collectors.

The centrepiece of the celebration is a premium Vinylphyle edition of the original album. This reissue has been mastered from the original analogue tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl to ensure the highest possible sound quality. The release is housed in a “tip-on” gatefold jacket featuring Ernie Barnes’ iconic cover art, alongside reproductions of original tape boxes and new liner notes from acclaimed producer SaLaAM ReMi. ReMi reflects in the notes that the album represents a pivotal moment in his own musical coming-of-age.
In addition to the standard reissue, fans can look forward to I Want You 2, a double-LP set that gathers bonus tracks, rarities, and alternate takes previously only available on the 2003 CD expansion. This set includes an exclusive lithograph and an introduction by R&B artist Arin Ray.
Recording for the album took place at Gaye’s legendary “Marvin’s Room” studio on Sunset Boulevard. Working alongside collaborator Leon Ware, Gaye produced a suite of tracks that bridged the gap between late-night soul and the burgeoning disco scene. The sessions produced enduring staples such as “After The Dance” and “Since I Had You,” further cementing Gaye’s legacy as the definitive voice of romantic soul.
