Macy Gray celebrates debut album’s 25th anniversary with tour

Macy Gray is celebrating her multi-platinum debut album, On How Life Is, 25 years after its release with an anniversary tour, according to spokesman.com. The critically acclaimed record, released when Gray was 28, became a pivotal moment in her life, reflecting the universal experience of navigating young adulthood.

“It’s that moment in your life when you’re trying to grow up and you think you know stuff, but then you find out you really don’t,” Gray shared. This relatable theme propelled the album to the Top 5 on the Billboard charts and sold millions worldwide.

Gray admits she never anticipated the album’s massive success, particularly for the hit single “I Try.” She initially aimed for an upbeat, club-friendly sound, surprised by the label’s confidence in “I Try” as a major song. “I was just excited to have a record deal finally and to put a little bit of money in my pocket,” she said.

The album’s success dramatically altered Gray’s life. Now, two and a half decades later, performing these songs nightly evokes strong memories, both good and bad. Gray recalls every detail, from the moments of excitement to the writing process.

Gray promises energetic shows during the tour, noting, “The goal is always to make people feel better after they leave and put a smile on people’s faces.”
