‘Longlegs’ breaks records, astounds with terrifying tale

Longlegs, the latest horror film from director Osgood Perkins, has taken the box office by storm, setting new records and captivating audiences, per movieweb.com. Grossing $3 million in Thursday previews, the film shattered Neon’s previous preview haul record, cementing itself as a must-see summer release.

Perkins, following in the footsteps of his father, horror legend Anthony Perkins, has crafted a genuinely terrifying experience that is resonating with viewers. Early projections suggest that Longlegs could become Neon’s biggest opening week ever, with some estimates as high as $20 million. This would surpass Neon’s previous record-holder, Immaculate, which debuted with $5.3 million in its first week.

Nicolas Cage’s transformative portrayal of the titular character, Longlegs, has been a significant factor in the film’s success. Critics and audiences alike have praised Cage’s performance, noting his ability to completely immerse himself in the role of the satanic serial killer. His chilling transformation and nearly unrecognisable appearance have added to the film’s haunting atmosphere.

The film, which also stars Maika Monroe as semi-psychic FBI agent Lee Harker, follows her pursuit of the brutal killer. Harker’s unique abilities and troubled past add depth to the story, making the suspense and horror all the more gripping. With an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Longlegs has received widespread acclaim for its skillful direction and compelling narrative.

MovieWeb’s Will Sayre described Longlegs as “the scariest film of the year,” highlighting Perkins’ masterful script and direction. Sayre praised the film’s exploration of universal themes such as motherly sacrifice, childhood trauma, and moral dilemmas, which elevate it beyond typical horror fare.

Nicolas Cage, known for his diverse roles in horror, has described his portrayal of Longlegs as a liberating experience, drawing from his own life to bring the character to life. In an interview with AP, Cage shared his unique approach to the role, adding another layer of intrigue to the film’s reception.
