After a seven-year hiatus Kenya’s Kisima Music Awards is back with the gala night scheduled to take place on December 13 in Nairobi.
According to organizers, this year the award is under the theme Reawakening the soul, spirit and vibrancy of Africa through Music and Film.
African artists would be awarded in 18 categories-nine each in music and film with another 18 categories specifically created for Kenya.
The chairman of Kisima Music and Film Awards Dr Fred Simiyu says for the very first time, the Pan African Kisima Music & Film Awards is open to the entire African continent.
“The awards – a Pan-African melting pot of authentic talent-driven by an unrelenting zeal to show-case the rich diversity of African Music and film,” Dr Simiyu said during the launch of the awards in Nairobi.
He added: This year’s Kisima Music and Film Awards is a Pan African event dedicated to tell the African narrative through culture, music, stories and creativity.
The chairman said the music and film awards will be a celebration of African talent, a strengthening of African solidarity and a point of convergence for show-casing African talent, skills, dreams and aspirations.
The 2020 Kisima Music & Film Awards is audacious, deep and progressive. Focus will be the use of digital nomination platforms and with a focus on Social Good to lead from the front in the wake of the global Corona Virus Pandemic.
The use of digital nomination portal allows all of Africa’s bilingual diversities; Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone and Arabic north to nominate their champions and heroes before the team of eminent, experienced panel of industry players, music scholars, veteran musicians and film artists pick the finalists. The process of picking the winners will be participatory and transparent.
The event is making a come-back after a hiatus of seven years during which the awards have been re-energized and revamped to cover the continent and include the film category too.
