Kevin Costner shared a touching remembrance of his late co-star Whitney Houston in a poignant tribute marking his 70th birthday, demonstrating that their connection in The Bodyguard extended far beyond the silver screen, per people.com.
Costner took to Instagram on January 18 to share a behind-the-scenes photo from the 1992 romantic thriller, featuring himself alongside Houston and her hairstylist Ellin LaVar. “This photo reminds me of how lucky I am to be getting another birthday,” Costner wrote, adding poignantly, “We lost such a light when we lost Whitney.”
The birthday reflection comes as Costner continues to maintain a deep reverence for Houston’s memory, more than a decade after her untimely passing in 2012 at age 48. During the 2022 SAG Awards, Costner spoke about Houston’s enduring impact, particularly highlighting her iconic rendition of “I Will Always Love You.”
“When movies are working at their very best, they’re about moments and images that you’ll never ever forget,” he remarked, noting how Houston’s a cappella opening of the song changed the musical landscape forever.
In a recent PEOPLE cover story, Costner also revealed a moving account of his experience delivering the eulogy at Houston’s 2012 memorial service. Despite pressure to keep his speech brief due to CNN’s coverage, Costner stood firm in his commitment to properly honour his friend. “I said, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t realize CNN was here, but they can take a commercial break,'” he recalled. “‘I’m going to say what I want to say. I came a long way to talk about this little girl.'”
The actor’s birthday celebrations also included a nostalgic touch, as he shared a childhood photo of himself in cowboy attire, reflecting on his lifelong passion for Western roles that has defined much of his career, including his recent work on Yellowstone.
