Joshua Chizoma has emerged winner of the Awele Creative Trust fiction prize for 2020.
Chizoma won for his short story ” Their Boy”. The prize created by award winning author and former Booker prize judge, Chika Unigwe is now in it’s 6th year.
Announcing the prize, the organisers noted that the judges chose the entry because “Chizoma’s writing is elegant and ambitious. He takes risks which pays off. ‘Their Boy” is a story of the evolution of a complicated relationship and the heartbreaking decisions that must be made. Beautiful and tragic, it is a worthy winner.”
Commenting on the award, Chika Unigwe said “I am delighted with the quality of entries we keep getting and I look forward to what Chizoma does in the future.”
The prize was first awarded in 2015 (for 2014 ) to Caleb Adebayo . The 2019 award went to Bakporhe Ufuomaoghene for ‘Money Wife.’
This year’s prize was sponsored by Mr. Chikere M. Ezeh while the 2019 prize was sponsored by US based Chikezie Iloanya.
