‘Inside Out 2’ dominates box office again amid new releases

In a competitive weekend at the box office, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is leading the charge, per variety.com. The Disney release grossed another $17.1 million on Friday, down 43% from its previous $30.5 million. A three-day gross exceeding $53 million would place it among the top 10 third weekends in domestic box office history, aiming for a spot currently held by films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Spider-Man: No Way Home. By Sunday, Inside Out 2 is expected to surpass $468 million in North America, moving rapidly towards the billion-dollar global milestone, a first for 2024 since Barbie.

A Quiet Place: Day One, although second, is performing strongly. The Paramount release earned $22.5 million from 3,708 theatres on Friday, surpassing the opening day gross of its 2021 sequel. Projections for the weekend stand at $53 million, potentially beating the 2018 original’s franchise record. With a $67 million production budget, the film received positive reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, indicating potential longevity at the box office.

On the other hand, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is struggling. The Western earned $4.1 million on Friday from 3,334 locations, aligning with low-teens projections for the weekend. Despite a $100 million production budget and $30 million in marketing costs, the film received mixed reviews and a B- CinemaScore, raising concerns about its future performance.

Meanwhile, Sony and Columbia’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die grossed $2.835 million on Friday, expected to reach $10.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $165.1 million. The action sequel is closing in on Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Lastly, the Telugu-language sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD earned $1.9 million on Friday from 1,234 locations. The Nag Ashwin-directed film is projected to make $6.2 million over the weekend, following $5.5 million in previews, marking a notable performance among Indian cinema releases.
