“I think they’re flattered”: Sabrina Carpenter on ex-boyfriends & fan backlash

Sabrina Carpenter has candidly addressed the fan reaction to her recent breakup with actor Barry Keoghan, revealing she doesn’t feel “badly” about the backlash he received, according to nme.com. In a revealing interview on CBS Mornings, the pop star was asked by Gayle King about the fervent loyalty of her fanbase and the criticism they aimed at Keoghan.

“I feel pretty transparent going into any of my relationships, that I write songs,” Carpenter said, discussing the inspiration behind her music. “And I think they’re just as down for it.”

Her seventh studio album, ‘Man’s Best Friend,’ which dropped on Friday, has been interpreted by fans as a direct nod to her former relationship. Tracks on the record, including the hit single “Manchild,” feature lyrics that some believe are a subtle jab at Keoghan.

“I think also most of the time, they’ve been pretty flattered when they get a song written about them, good or bad,” she explained. “I think they’re just excited to get a shout-out.”

The singer and Keoghan were first linked in September 2023, with their romance playing out in the public eye. Keoghan even starred in the music video for her chart-topping song “Please Please Please.” Their split was rumoured in December 2024, prompting the actor to speak out on social media about the “disgusting” behaviour and online harassment he faced.

Despite the public drama, Carpenter maintained her perspective. “I’m not scared of men in that sense,” she said. “I will attract exactly who I’m supposed to attract.”
