While some authors spend decades crafting a single novel, Freida McFadden operates at a lightning-fast pace. According to parade.com, the author of The Housemaid has already released Dear Debbie this year, with a second thriller, The Divorce, slated for late 2026.
In a recent interview with eonline.com, McFadden pulled back the curtain on the disciplined, and slightly chaotic, process that allows her to outpace industry giants like George R.R. Martin.

McFadden’s primary secret is momentum. Once an idea strikes, she commits to the first draft until it is finished, admitting she “ignores everything from life” during the process.
“I can’t stop and move onto something else until the work is done,” she explained. This intensity allows her to produce a complete manuscript while the inspiration is still fresh, a stark contrast to the slow-burn approach of her contemporaries.
Perhaps most impressive is that McFadden maintains this output while working as a doctor and raising a family. She credits her productivity to “multitasking skills” honed in the medical profession.
However, her dual career comes with unique boundaries. McFadden avoids tours due to anxiety and a desire for privacy, famously wearing wigs in public to remain unrecognisable.
She identifies her husband as her “magic,” noting that both he and her mother serve as her first readers and sounding boards for new plots.
Writing at such a high frequency isn’t without its hurdles. McFadden acknowledged that because she often works on multiple projects simultaneously, some readers have noticed recurring plot motifs in books released back-to-back.
Despite this, her fanbase remains loyal. By balancing a rigorous writing schedule with a supportive home life, McFadden has turned high-volume publishing into a fine art, ensuring her readers never have to wait long for their next fix.
