HarperCollins has launched its highly anticipated Author Academy for 2025, offering aspiring writers from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds a unique opportunity to break into the publishing world.
Applications opened on February 7th and will close on February 24th, with the six-week course set to begin on May 9. Since its inception in January 2021, the programme has successfully graduated 200 authors, many of whom have gone on to pursue successful literary careers.
Led by Ken Wilson-Max, publisher of the HCCB imprint Kumusha Books, the Author Academy provides free, comprehensive training in fiction, non-fiction and children’s literature. Participants will gain invaluable insights from industry experts and acclaimed authors, including past contributors like Jamila Gavin, Sarah Morgan and Rebecca F. Kuang. The programme also includes live webinars, pre-recorded modules, and one-on-one mentorship from HarperCollins professionals, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience.
Eligibility criteria require applicants to be 18 or older, reside in the UK or Ireland, and have no prior literary representation. Successful candidates will not only receive a HarperCollins Academy Certificate upon completion but also gain access to the Author Academy Alumni Network, a thriving community of underrepresented authors. Additionally, graduates can submit their manuscripts directly to HarperCollins for potential publication, though the publisher is under no obligation to accept them.
With only 15 spots available, competition is expected to be fierce. Aspiring authors are encouraged to apply soon for this transformative opportunity to hone their craft and connect with industry leaders.
