Guy Ritchie is set to bring his signature style to “Road House 2,” with Jake Gyllenhaal confirmed to reprise his role as ex-UFC fighter Dalton in the highly anticipated sequel to Amazon MGM’s streaming hit.
As reported by variety.com, the upcoming project marks the third collaboration between Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, following Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant and the forthcoming action thriller “In the Grey.”
Will Beall, known for penning Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, is handling the screenplay, though plot details remain tightly under wraps.
Amazon MGM’s decision to fast-track a sequel comes as no surprise after the streaming success of the first film, which attracted nearly 80 million worldwide viewers in its first eight weeks, becoming the studio’s most-watched original film debut ever. The reboot of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic followed Gyllenhaal’s character as he took on a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, ultimately becoming entangled in a dangerous conflict with outlaws, bikers, and a ruthless developer.
Ritchie steps in for original director Doug Liman, who publicly expressed frustration over the streaming-only release of the first film. The British filmmaker brings an impressive track record that includes the billion-dollar grossing Aladdin and the British gangster comedy The Gentlemen, which spawned a successful Netflix series.
The production team includes producers Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment, alongside Gyllenhaal for his Nine Stories Productions with Josh McLaughlin. Ivan Atkinson will serve as executive producer.
