“Golden Fleas”: Crown Troupe of Africa explores African migration at J. Randle Centre

Crown Troupe of Africa in collaboration with the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History presents Golden Fleas, a thought-provoking new stage play.

The production, written and directed by renowned artiste Segun Adefila, delves into the complex and often paradoxical motivations behind modern African migration.

According to Adefila, Golden Fleas is a powerful and thought-provoking play that delves into themes of identity, cultural dislocation, freedom and the human condition.

“It reflects our collective experiences—our struggles, our hopes, and the choices we make in pursuit of happiness. At its heart, it asks: what truly drives us, and what do we overlook on the journey to freedom?

“In a world where we are constantly chasing or fleeing, we often fail to recognize what is right before us. This captivating production poses a daring question: What if the Golden Fleece we seek has always been within reach? What if, instead of the treasure we long for, we have been settling for scraps?” He stated.

Through a poignant “play within a play” format, Golden Fleas, he adds, follows diverse individuals bound by the desire for freedom. “Each carries a past scarred by struggle, each shaped by their unique journey. As they move toward an uncertain destination, their stories intertwine, forcing us to reflect on what we are all searching for”.

He employs one and all to come witness this moving exploration of life’s most pressing questions: What is missing? What are we seeking? Could it be right under our noses?

The play will be performed by SIWESS students from Federal University, Oye Ekiti and Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo at the J. Randle Centre, Onikan, Lagos. There will be two showings on Saturday, August 30 at 3pm and 6pm. Tickets are already selling and will also be available at the gate.
