Goethe-Institut Nigeria to showcase emerging creative talents

Goethe-Institut Nigeria is set to celebrate a weekend of artistic innovation and cultural exchange with its “Support & Connect 2024/2025: Weekend of Project Presentations and Performances.” According to a statement, the two-day event, taking place on Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21, will feature a dynamic showcase of works by artists and cultural practitioners who have been part of the institute’s “Support & Connect” initiative. The general public is invited to experience a vibrant programme of presentations, performances, and exhibitions at the Goethe-Institut’s premises on Anifowoshe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The free event, running from 10am to 7pm daily, promises a deep dive into the contemporary creative landscape of Nigeria. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage with a diverse array of projects, from thought-provoking visual arts and literature to captivating dance and film. The “Support & Connect” programme is designed to foster the ideas, processes, and stories that are shaping the nation’s artistic scene.

The weekend will kick off with a welcome address by Dr. Nadine Siegert and Kolawole Oludamilare of the Goethe-Institut. The first day will feature presentations such as Taiwo Aiyedogbon’s “1-98 art studio” and Sam-Eze Chidera Ifeakanwa’s “Shades of Coal – Revisiting Time…”. The afternoon will be enlivened by dance performances in the parking lot, including Joshua Akubo Gabriel’s “Enem” and a piece by Gloria Biachi.

The creative exploration continues on Saturday with presentations on projects like “The year of the Fabulous” by Egbiameje Omole and “Everything Last and Nothing Ends” by Nosazemen Agbontaen and Tareowei Oki. The day will also feature discussions on various arts festivals, including the Abuja International Arts Ability Festival and the Benue Book and Arts Festival. Throughout the weekend, attendees can also enjoy film screenings and ongoing exhibitions such as Immaculata Abba’s “restful Magazine” and Christopher Nelson’s “On Palm Oil Making.” The event aims to be a nexus for artists, cultural enthusiasts, and the public to connect, converse, and celebrate the collaborative spirit driving Nigeria’s creative communities.
