The Fundación Paiz para la Educación y la Cultura has announced Italian curator Eugenio Viola as the artistic director for the upcoming 24th Bienal de Arte Paiz, per artforum.com.
Scheduled for November 2025 to February 2026, the event will unfold across Guatemala City and Antigua, reinforcing its status as the region’s premier art exhibition since its inception in 1978.
Viola, currently serving as the artistic director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, brings a wealth of international experience to the role. His vision for the Bienal emphasizes art’s power to reflect and challenge our interconnected yet fragmented world. “I envision a polyphonic, inclusive, and participatory project,” Viola stated, highlighting his intention to engage with Guatemala’s diverse artistic landscape while addressing global themes.
The curator’s impressive portfolio includes organising the Italian Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale and curating groundbreaking exhibitions for renowned artists worldwide. Viola’s expertise in performance art and body poetics promises to infuse the Bienal with fresh perspectives on contemporary issues.
