‘Emilia Pérez’ dominates Oscars with 13 nominations

Emilia Pérez has dominated the 2025 Oscar nominations, securing an impressive 13 nods including the prestigious Best Picture category, according to reports. The Spanish-language musical drama’s remarkable achievement highlights the growing recognition of international cinema in Hollywood’s most celebrated awards ceremony.

The nominations revealed a diverse and compelling lineup of films. The immigrant saga The Brutalist and the musical adaptation of Wicked followed closely behind Emilia Pérez with 10 nominations each. The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Vatican thriller Conclave each garnered eight nominations.

Wicked‘s stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received recognition in the Actress and Supporting Actress categories, respectively, highlighting the strong year for musical cinema.

In a career-defining moment, Demi Moore scored her first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Actress in The Substance, marking a powerful comeback for the veteran actress. The film itself collected five nominations, further validating Moore’s compelling performance.

The nominations also brought surprises and notable snubs. Despite previous acclaim, high-profile actresses like Nicole Kidman, Pamela Anderson and Angelina Jolie were notably absent from the Actress category. Equally surprising was the complete shutout of the anticipated tennis drama Challengers, which received zero nominations despite earlier critical praise.

The acting categories showcase an intriguing mix of established and emerging talents. Timothée Chalamet, Adrien Brody, Sebastian Stan, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes compete for Best Actor, while the Best Actress category features Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison, Moore and Fernanda Torres.

Technical categories saw Dune: Part Two and Nosferatu dominating, particularly in cinematography and production design. The Best Animated Feature category promises fierce competition with entries like Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot.

Comedic actors Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang brought humour and energy to the nomination announcements, reflecting the vibrant spirit of this year’s film industry.

The 2025 Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2 in Los Angeles and broadcast live on ABC and Hulu, promise to be a night of celebration, surprise, and potentially historic moments.

The stage is set for what could be one of the most unpredictable and exciting Oscar races in recent memory.
